A cinematic sequel is in the works.

Godzilla vs. Kong pits two famous adversaries against one another in a battle for the survival of the Earth. The journey is perilous, but it eventually brings Kong and his guards to Jia, a tiny orphaned girl with whom Kong has formed an unbreakable bond of love and devotion. They find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, who attacks them. All that is known about the mystery that exists deep inside the Earth's core is only the beginning.

In 2024, five years after Godzilla defeated his alien foe Ghidorah, Godzilla and Kong are the only Titans still alive on Earth. The combination of Ghidorah's storm and the storm cell that surrounds Skull Island has caused the island's climate to become unstable, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulates the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language.

But when Jia shows up to the biodome and offers him a doll, the Titan, realizing that he's confined inside, promptly throws a tree at it.

Following the assault, popular opinion has shifted away from Godzilla, who is no longer seen as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now an adult and a follower of Bernie's podcast, is concerned when she hears about Godzilla's latest assault on her school. After school, she makes a failed attempt to reason with her widowed father Mark (who is serving as Monarch's director) about a probable cause of Godzilla's rampage, but he ignores everything she says, stating merely that beasts, like humans, may evolve. Later on, Madison enlists the assistance of her closest friend Josh Valentine to track down the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and unravel the mysteries of Apex.

Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons recruits Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to help guide them to the Hollow Earth, an underground world below the Earth and the hidden home to the Titans, in search of a powerful energy source. At first, Nathan is initially hesitant since his brother tried to explore the Hollow Earth, but a strong anti-gravity field inside the tunnel ended up killing him. He finally agrees after Walter reveals that Apex has created and developed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized crafts that are capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

To help guide them to the Hollow Earth, Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with his idea of using Kong as their navigator to lead them to the energy source since Skull Island is no longer able to contain him (because Kong has grown too large) and allow him to survive. Though Ilene declines at first as she explains that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off of Skull Island, she finally accepts after being convinced by Nathan that they need to undertake this mission in order to stop Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home.

Kong is locked up aboard a custom-built barge with the Apex crew, led by Walter's daughter Maia. While Jia holds hands with Kong, Kong signs the word "home" for Ilene as he feels restless and worried in the middle of the night. Next morning, Ilene tells Nathan about raising Jia as her own after a series of harsh and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the lone survivor since Kong protected her, leading to their bond."

As the Titan approaches and fights the troops before capsizing the barge and almost drowning Kong and the others aboard, Jia detects Godzilla's arrival by sensing vibrations through the ship. Thankfully, Nathan unlocks Kong's shackles, enabling him to fight Godzilla underwater long enough for him to swim to the surface and tip the barge back on its head, sparing the party from drowning. Kong climbs aboard a nearby aircraft carrier to confront Godzilla, who also climbs aboard to confront Kong. Before fighter aircraft distract Godzilla enough for Kong to force him back into the water, the two Titans trade ferocious punches. Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath from under the carrier, but Kong jumps off to avoid the explosion, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and pull him deep into the water, aiming to drown the Titan.

Godzilla, on the other hand, gets confused by depth charges, allowing Kong to emerge for a breath of fresh air.

Seeing no other option, Nathan decides that the group should instead shut down all the ships' power to trick Godzilla into thinking he destroyed them and Kong was defeated which eventually succeeds. Godzilla observes the destroyed fleet curiously and, believing that he had won, swims away. Realizing that Godzilla could return if they reactivate the ships, the group change plans and instead fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entry point in Antarctica, the place where Ghidorah was originally frozen. There, Jia explains to Kong that his home is through the entrance, but he is too reluctant to go.

Meanwhile, Madison and Josh encounter Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry. Together, they slip inside the devastated Apex headquarters, only to discover that Bernie's "eye" has vanished. They accidentally confine themselves in an antigravity transport truck transporting Skullcrawler eggs down an underground tube to Hong Kong.

A mechanical version of Godzilla, "Mechagodzilla" is being operated by Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's top technological officer, Ren Serizawa, as the trio disembarks in the darkened room they found themselves in. Just as soon as Walter activates Mechagodzilla, he throws a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the chamber to see how strong the mecha would be while facing off against the Titans. When the Skullcrawler is about to attack Madison, Josh, and Bernie, Mechagodzilla grabs it and restrains it with a tremendous red energy beam, enabling Josh, Bernie, and Madison to take cover in a tiny hatch. Because of power supply limits, the test is halted at the point of its completion.

It is then revealed that Walter aims to use the energy of the Hollow Earth to surpass Mechagodzilla's constraints. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the reason Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all of the Titans so that humans may become the apex species on Earth. While looking for an exit, Madison and the others come across a room where Ren is sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been transformed into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla via radio waves after Apex acquired it from Alan Jonah after it was previously bitten off by Godzilla during his battle with Ghidorah five years ago.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover a similar ecology to Skull Island within the Hollow Earth. They are unexpectedly assaulted while traversing the area by a pair of Warbats, with one of the HEAVs being destroyed. Kong was able to rescue the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second, knocking it unconscious. However, the beast recovers and constricts itself around Kong. Before the Warbat has a chance to suffocate Kong, the creature is hit by missiles fired from Nathan's team's HEAV, allowing Kong to escape and savagely beat the monster to death before feeding on the Warbat's intestines.

Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. Kong accepts the challenge and starts his journey to Hong Kong with his axe. Godzilla's atomic breath is halted when Kong shoves his axe down his throat in Hong Kong, gaining the upper hand and preventing him from unleashing it. Godzilla removes and discards Kong's axe, which he uses to stab Kong in the thigh. In the second bout of Godzilla vs Kong, Kong retrieves his axe and brings it down on Godzilla, generating an explosion that forces both Titans back, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had triumphed.

On their feet again after being knocked down, Godzilla and Kong are each looking for each other while perched on the top of a building. A construction crane is thrown into an apartment building, distracting Godzilla enough for Kong to ambush him from above and place the Titan in a chokehold, intending to strangle him, but Godzilla breaks free and unleashes his full fury against Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. Godzilla roars at Kong as he is subjugated and held down, while Kong violently roars in defiance at Godzilla as he is beaten.

Walter instructs Ren to send Mechagodzilla back to Apex headquarters to kill Godzilla. Despite Ren's cautions not to utilize the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, the mecha is activated and begins its mission. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are also brought to Walter by the security officers. Madison accuses Walter of taking responsibility for allowing mankind to fight Godzilla and the Titans, despite Walter's denials.

Unknown to Walter as his back is turned while he monologues about his creation, Mechagodzilla suddenly goes haywire under the influence of both the energy source and Ghidorah's neural networks, resulting in the robot killing Walter with a swipe of its hand and Ren's death by electrocution. Mechagodzilla, now possessed by Ghidorah's consciousness, breaks free from the Apex facility underneath Victoria Peak Mountain and rampages through the city before Godzilla confronts it. Quickly coming into contact with Godzilla, Mechagodzilla fires a barrage of missiles at its organic counterpart before the two engage in battle.

As Godzilla and Mechagodzilla duel, Josh and Bernie try to stop the renegade robot remotely, while Madison calls in Mark for help. Eventually, Godzilla takes the upper hand and scorches Mechagodzilla. Jia realizes that Kong's pulse is fading as Mechagodzilla continues to beat Godzilla as the three approach the unconscious Kong. Maia had previously said that the HEAVs were capable of powering Las Vegas for a week, so Nathan recalls that and sets the final HEAV to self-destruct, detonating the vessel and unleashing an enormous electrical charge that immediately revives Kong.

Kong leaps atop Mechagodzilla and deflects Godzilla's life-threatening crimson energy beam into the air. After recognizing Kong saved his life and that he is not a foe, Godzilla assists Kong in fighting Mechagodzilla.

Working together, the two Titans are able to reverse the tide, but the robot proves to be much more powerful than their combined might and ultimately defeats them both. Kong recovers his axe from the wreckage after having misplaced it during his earlier battle against Godzilla. He then attacks Mechagodzilla with it, but his weapon is rendered ineffective by the robot's tail drill, which attempts to fatally impale Kong with its tail drill. Kong is killed by the robot's tail drill. As it seems like all hope is gone for Kong and Godzilla at this point, Bernie, understanding that he and the others are powerless, takes out a flask of vodka and suggests that they all have a drink. Godzilla and King Kong are able to recover and regain the upper hand after Josh snatches the flask from Bernie's grasp and accidentally short-circuits Mechagodzilla's controls by pouring the contents of the drink all over the control panel. This allows Godzilla and King Kong to recover and regain the upper hand.

Madison reconnects with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie, who are delighted to see him and invite him onto his program to talk about the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears out of nowhere, causing Kong to grab his axe and continue the fight. Godzilla does not attack Kong, instead staring him down. Kong lowers his axe, putting an end to the conflict between his and Godzilla's species. Godzilla and Kong are now on an equal footing, and Godzilla returns to the water calmly, with Kong and the rest of the audience looking on.

Godzilla vs. Kong has gotten largely positive feedback. As of April 16, 2021, Rotten Tomatoes has 341 reviews, 254 of which are fresh, with a "Tomatometer" score of 74 percent fresh. "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects," the site's audience review description said. "Forget character development and human drama; Godzilla vs. Kong delivers all the excitement you'd expect from two huge monsters battling it out." While many people enjoyed the film's monster brawling, others were let down by the "half-baked" human element. The film credited for reversing the COVID-19 pandemic-fueled box office drop with an estimated $48.5 million in US box office receipts by Sunday morning of the five-day weekend release period. WarnerMedia claimed in a statement that the film had the largest viewership of any series or movie aired on HBO Max since its debut, but it didn't disclose precise figures. The film also fared well outside of the United States, earning over $236 million in non-US territories.

Since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla and King Kong haven't appeared in a picture together.

Kyle Chandler reprises his role as King Kong in this film, after his appearance in Peter Jackson's 2005 version.

With Chandler's presence in King Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong, this resulted in the actor's unique distinction of being the only individual to be present in the cast of a King Kong picture, a Godzilla film, and a crossover feature between the two.

It is comparable to a sequence in which Eva Unit-02 hops from ship to ship while attempting to dodge an angel, which takes place in the same film as Godzilla's jump from ship to ship.
